-German inventor seeking to promote nationwide culture in 1880s post-unification decides to spread stereoscopes of national tales acted out by people, eventually someone else decides to make it film and add it to magic lantern and successfully broadcasts it to an audience in 1889, calling it a vitaskop, to great success

-blooms as a technology in 1890s, becomes increasingly popular


-Buenaventura vita industry focused on satisfying bilingual audience

-initially headquartered in San Francisco, as with everything in country

-spreads nationwide over 20th century, becomes quite popular

-however, faced with rise of speakies, it decides against new technology to satisfy both audiences

-also because speakies in large city of SF with ambient noise hard

-American vita industry increasingly eats into its market because it embraces speakies

-eventually, experimental filmmakers in San Jose and San Diego experiment more with speakies, while complacent SF industry falters and falls (replaced by Photescopy eventually)

-with San Diego maintaining itself over rural town of San Jose by:

-being able to maintain more people

-not face as many patent hounds from SF

-cheaper prices

-with bilingual vitas with audio certain scenes, filmed in both English and Spanish

-which also allows for large viewerships in both linguistic regions
